Gardai are investigating the incident in Cork city centre

A YOUNG man had part of his ear bitten off after a clash between Christmas revellers in Cork city centre.

The attack occurred shortly after 2.30am (Friday) when a row erupted between two men near a city centre fast food outlet.

Despite efforts by others to calm the dispute, one man was suddenly attacked by the other.

During a melee on the ground, a 23 year old man had part of his ear bitten off and also suffered several punches to the face.

The attacker then fled the scene on foot.

Gardai attended the scene on South Main Street and the young man was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he underwent emergency surgery.

He is now recovering in CUH.

Gardai closed off the scene of the attack to allow for a full technical examination and appealed to anyone who was in the South Main Street area to contact the Bridewell Garda Station.

Gardai said they believe CCTV security camera footage will play a crucial role in their investigation.

The attacker was not known to the victim.
