'Christmas cheer is important this year' – Higgins

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has stressed the importance of dishing out Christmas cheer to families struggling financially in the wake of a tough Budget.

President Higgins has paid a visit to the patients of the Transitional Care Unit at Our Lady's Crumlin Children's hospital.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, President Higgins acknowledged that this Christmas will be especially tough for many around the country.

"I'm issuing a Christmas message next week and I'll be pointing to the resilience of the Irish people," he said.

Bringing some festive spirit to the Dublin hospital, the President greeted several former and current patients of the Transitional Care Unit.
