Children's referendum count starts this morning

The counting of votes in the children's referendum takes place this morning.

The low turnout for the referendum is expected to be somewhere between 30pc and 40pc, possibly closer to the lower end.

Following the appallingly bad turnout, an indication of the outcome is expected within a short time of boxes being opened.

Official results will flow from the 43 constituencies across the country from lunchtime with a national result anticipated by early afternoon.

The holding of the referendum on a Saturday appeared to do little to boost turnout.

Voting was very slow across the country all day as polling clerk's reported the turnout was well down on normal patterns.

Polls opened at 9am on the back of a politically-damaging Supreme Court ruling over the misuse of public funds to inform the electorate about the campaign
