Parents were left "disgusted" after vandals defecated on a children's slide at a popular local park.

Local Cllr Gerry McMonagle told Independent.ie that children were playing in the local park in Letterkenny Town Park in Co Donegal on the Bank Holiday Monday when parents noticed a "disgusting smell".

“In the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday vandals smeared the children’s slides with excrement," he told Independent.ie.

“Parents had taken their children to the park and went to put their young kids down the slide when they noticed the faeces.

“There was a particularly bad smell because it was an enclosed slide and faeces were smeared down it.”

Cllr McMonagle said he closed the slide off and checked the others before more parents arrived.

“I don’t know what kind of person would do that sort of a thing to a children’s slide. Kids were put at risk and could have been covered in the faeces if they went down the slide.

“Parents were disgusted at the thought.”

The park was closed while the slide was steam-cleaned and disinfected by the local council.

“It’s an awful act. The park is a large area. It’s not as if the person was caught short and had to go. It was a deliberate act and it’s despicable,” Cllr McMonagle continued.

The local councillor is now calling for CCTV to be installed in the area to halt antisocial behaviour.

“We have new equipment in the park and equipment for children with disabilities. We need CCTV to protect the area.

“We have security in the park but they can’t be there 24/7. The anti-social behaviour needs to be stopped.”
