Four children have been left orphaned after their father died in a drowning accident in Limerick on Tuesday evening.
Johnny Casey (35) was walking a pony in the river at Plassey at approximately 6pm when the animal lost its balance following a surge of water.
Mr Casey attempted to help the animal but both were swept downstream.
His body was removed from the River Shannon yesterday morning following a search supervised by Limerick Marine Rescue and the Shannon Coast Guard helicopter.
The remains of the pony were also found.
Mr Casey’s four children, aged between 4 and 14, were being cared for by family members at their home in Clonlong halting site yesterday. His wife, Sue Ellen, passed away over three years ago.
Mr Casey had cared for children Timmy Joe, Jay, Brittany and Keley since the death of his wife.
The body was taken to University Hospital Limerick were an autopsy was carried out.
Gardai are now preparing reports for a coroner’s request.
