The incident unfolded when a man in his 20s was chased by a group of youths as he walked home in the Waterside area of Derry.

Police said the gang shouted sectarian abuse and threw bottles and stones at the man.

The youths followed him to a house at Meehan's Terrace and, after he had gone inside, a stone was thrown and broke a bedroom window.

The young child was sleeping in the room when the glass shattered.

The PSNI said the child was "lucky" not to be injured.

The attack happened in the early hours of Monday but details have only now been released by police.

Detectives, who are treating the incident as a sectarian hate crime, have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
