Chicken moves up the meat pecking order

CHICKEN is now the most popular meat in Ireland, accounting for a third of what we consume, and sales have remained steady in spite of the recession.
Irish people are among the biggest chicken eaters in Europe eating nearly 26kg a year of it, with sales worth €180m this year, a Bord Bia Poultry and Egg conference has been told.
Egg sales, meanwhile, have soared by 11pc on last year and we each eat 165 of them a year, at a total value of €85m.
However despite strong sales the sector is facing serious challenges due to high feed costs, with the ban on battery hens introduced this year also putting pressure on the sector.
