Chats, but no rebel yell from Lenihan
Smiling and looking relaxed, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan set tongues wagging yesterday when he was spotted talking to a group of backbenchers.
Among those deep in conversation with him were two prominent Fianna Fail rebels, Tom Kitt and John McGuinness, who were both sacked by Taoiseach Brian Cowen and have both subsequently called on him to quit.
Also present were Fianna Fail's Laois-Offaly TD Sean Fleming, Mayo TD Beverley Flynn and veteran Galway East TD Noel Treacy.
So was this a "Gang of Five" looking to get Mr Lenihan to take on Mr Cowen?
Not so, said Dublin South TD Mr Kitt. He said the Finance Minister was discussing the economy, had a "fantastic openness toward colleagues" and would always talk to them about such matters.
