'Charmy army' still having a ball

Mick Brown in London

Having conquered Ireland with a charm offensive of almost nuclear proportions, US President Barack Obama rolled his invading 'charmy army' into Britain yesterday and up to the very gates of Buckingham Palace.

Greeted in the courtyard by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, they were then ushered into the 1844 Room for a meeting with Prince William and his wife Kate, making their first public appearance together since their wedding.

The sheer star wattage was dazzling -- the most photographed couple in the world (that would be William and Kate) exchanging broad smiles and small talk with the second most photographed couple (that would be Michelle and Barack).

In an afternoon crowded with events, Mr Obama then went on to Downing Street for a courtesy call on David Cameron, before being joined by his wife for an unscheduled visit to the Globe Academy school in south London, where the two leaders visited a science class and played table tennis with students.
