Irish students working in the USA for the summer have been warned not to modify their passport ages to gain entry into bars or clubs.
The Union of Students in Ireland said today that it was aware that some students have been placing laminates on their passports' details page in order to change their date of birth.
The union says it is aware of several students, in the US on J1 or US travel visas, had been arrested while trying to travel or gain entry into licensed premises in the US using modified passports.
In a statement, the union warned that falsifying or altering a passport, which is a criminal offence in Ireland, is deemed a federal offence in the US, punishable by fine, imprisonment and/or refusal of future entry to the country.
It says students who have modified their travel documents in any way should contact their nearest Irish embassy or Consulate to arrange a replacement.
