Eight cattle escaped onto a busy motorway early this morning, which resulted in several collisions.

The incident happened on the M3 at junction 6 in Meath, with the cows first breaking onto the road at approximately 5:30am.

It is believed that eight cattle travelled 0.5km through two roundabouts before entering the motorway.

There were five vehicles involved collisions, with several motorists obtaining minor injuries. Three cows had to be euthanised as a result of their injuries.

The road was closed between junction 5 and junction 7 as a result of the accident and reopened at around 9:30am.

Emergency services were at the scene.
