The Garda Inspectorate Report details sample cases in which cancellations of fixed-charge notices were not justified:
Who got off: Rank-and-file garda
What happened: Caught speeding on four occasions between 2007-2011; no display of tax disc
Response: Reasons given by the officer included driving to a colleague's house because their alarm went off, and being asked to work at a summer festival.
Who got off? Taxi driver
What happened: Committed five driving and parking offences in 2010-2011
Response: It was found that the fixed charged notices were all cancelled by a superintendent outside the district where the offences took place.
Who got off? Garda Sergeant
What happened? Caught speeding on four occasions between 2007-2012
Response: On one occasion, the sergeant claimed that he was asked to return to the garda station to give back a set of keys he inadvertently took home.
