The 34-year-old suffered serious injuries in the attack near his home on Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra just after 1.30pm today.

The man was on temporary release and is serving a seven year prison sentence for a violent burglary in Coolock in 2009.

Emergency services arrived to the scene and rushed the man to the nearby Mater Hospital.

He is currently on life support with serious head injuries.

Originally from Ballyfermot, he had just been released from prison last week.

Gardai are currently carrying out a technical examination of a car which was later found burnt out in the East Wall area.

The incident is being investigated by detectives at Mountjoy Garda Station.

Last night the victim’s mother said her son was “fighting for his life”.
