MORE than 15,300 new cars have been sold under the Government's scrappage scheme, with sales up by 53pc so far this year, new figures reveal.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has been calling for the scheme to be maintained in the Budget.
Around 86,718 cars have been sold in the first 10 months of the year.
"It has exceeded our expectations," Suzanne Sheridan, spokeswoman for SIMI, said.
The industry group expects car sales to hit 90,000 by the end of this year.
