MAZDA is recalling approximately 800 cars in Ireland because of problems that could affect the power steering.
The recall involves the Mazda 3 and 5 models, which were built between April 2, 2007, and November 30,2008. In Europe this represents a total of 40,260 Mazda 3 and 30,242 Mazda 5 cars. An estimated 514,000 cars are involved worldwide.
A spokesman for Mazda Ireland said the cars affected are equipped with a hydraulic power steering system with an electrically motorised oil pump.
In some instances, residual particles from the inside of the hydraulic pipes might lead to a loss of steering power, he said. "The fail-safe mode will ensure the mechanical components of the steering system remain functional."
He said it would not affect safety. Customers will be invited to visit their dealership in October to have the hydraulic pipes and electric pump replaced. This will take about 90 minutes.
