The state of the housing market makes for a grim picture

The property market grew by just 0.3% last month, thanks mainly to continued demand in parts of Dublin.

Official figures from the Central Statistics Office revealed a slight fall in the rate of increase in May after April recorded the first overall jump in prices since last November.

The report showed residential property prices in Dublin up 0.5% last month but outside the capital prices were up by only 0.1% - further signs of a two-tier market.

Since the crash kicked in six years ago, the overall market value has been halved while in Dublin house prices are down on average 55%.
