CAO applications reach record high

College applications have hit a record 73,063, for this time of the year.

The figure reached when the CAO normal deadline passed at 5.15pm today is likely to rise further as a result of late applications.

Demand is up from 71,186 in February 2013  and has jumped from about 63,000 in February 2008, just before the economic crash.

The steady rise in school-leaver numbers, lack of work opportunities for school-leavers due to the recession and rising demand from mature students account for the growth in applications.
