FORMER Independent TD Jerry Cowley last night distanced himself from the divisive 'Shell to Sea' campaign, on his unveiling as Labour's latest election recruit, writes Aine Kerr.
The GP, who made his name campaigning on hospital services and the Rossport gas pipeline, lost his seat in the 2007 election after polling just 3,407 votes.
His close links with the divisive 'Shell to Sea' campaign was partly blamed on his staggering loss of votes.
As he now bids to win Labour's first seat in Mayo since 1927, he said he would help in future if there were "safety issues" for the local residents.
However, he insisted it was now time to "move on". He said he had been "vindicated" on the issue of safety after An Bord Pleanala decided to move the pipeline away from homes.
