Cancer-hit Mayo fan gets a big lift

Tom Shiel

A PASSIONATE Mayo fan who is recovering from cancer got the lift of his life yesterday – a high-speed helicopter ride to Dublin for the All-Ireland final.

Longstanding supporter Frank Warde from Castlebar was given the surprise treat by members of his family.

At the controls of the sleek black Robinson R44 – owned by Connacht Helicopters – that whisked him to the capital, was Joe Walsh from Kiltimagh, a brother of pop mogul Louis.

Frank had never flown in a helicopter before but said he wasn't at all nervous beforehand.

"The sun is shining. Mayo have a great chance of winning. What's there to be worried about," he asked.

"The helicopter trip was a great surprise," he said. "I might not have been able to make it to the game otherwise."

"I'm delighted for Frank," his wife Nancy said.
