Campaign for bullying victim raises $683,000

An online campaign that aimed to raise $5,000 (€4,000) to send a bullied New York bus monitor on a holiday has ended -- after raising $683,000.

A spokeswoman for the fundraising site Indiegogo said more than 30,000 people had contributed to 68-year-old Karen Klein, with donations coming in from 84 countries and all 50 states.

The fundraiser for the suburban Rochester grandmother was the idea of Max Sidorov, a 25-year-old Canadian who was moved by a 10-minute video posted online showing Klein enduring profanity, insults and threats from middle school students on a school bus.

Mr Sidorov said he was as surprised as anyone with the final result. "It just shows there are so many great people in the world."
