Cameras to catch drivers breaking red lights on Luas lines

When it comes to obeying red lights adjacent to Luas lines in Dublin, drivers are certainly not getting the message
The system, which is set to be introduced this year, will provide footage of drivers ignoring red lights at Luas junctions to the Gardai.

The Luas will soon see a camera system in place that will catch motorists breaking red lights at the tram junctions.

The system, which is set to be introduced this year, will provide footage of drivers ignoring red lights at Luas junctions to the Gardai.

Footage will then be assessed to see if penalty points should be imposed.

The news comes just three weeks after mum-of-one Yao Webster (35) was tragically killed when she was struck by a car beside the Red Line in Dublin city centre.

Collisions are more common on the red Luas line, which runs from West Dublin into the north city centre, as the track crosses more streets and junctions than the Green line.

A trial of the camera system has been carried out at select crossings already and the Department of Transport said it is expected to be put in place across the city by the end of the year.

The trial was run by Dublin City Council, An Garda Siochana and the Railway Procurement Agency
