Calls are flooding in to helpline ahead of CAO offers

The Exam Helpline was flooded with queries for a third day, with the total number of calls, so far, running to more than 700.
Once again yesterday, CAO procedures and Leaving Cert results rechecks topped the list of concerns in the 170 calls handled by guidance counsellors.
While students accounted for most of the calls on Wednesday, after the release of the Leaving Cert results, most of the queries since have been from parents.
The helpline is staffed by members of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and the student grants awarding body, SUSI, is also making a representative available every day to handle queries on the phone line.
While the number of calls to date is above 700, the counsellors have handled about twice that number of queries as many callers have more than one issue they need to discuss.
More than 46,000 thousand Leaving Certificate candidates have applied to the CAO and are awaiting Round One offers on Monday.
Many more students are considering other options, such as post-Leaving Certificate courses, or may need to rethink their plans after the offers are published.
The helpline will open on Monday to deal with any concerns that arise for students or parents/guardians after the the release of CAO offers.
It will operate on both Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 7pm and will also open on Wednesday from 8am to 1pm on 1800 265 165.
Exam Helpline 2014 is organised by the National Parents Council post primary (NPcpp), is sponsored by the Irish Independent and Eircom, and is supported by the Department of Education and Skills
The Irish Independent will publish a special 'Going to College' supplement on Monday
