But good news for businesses

THERE was some rare good news for business owners in the capital last night with the announcement by Dublin City Council that it is to reduce commercial rates by 1.7pc next year, writes Mark O'Regan.
Dublin Chamber of Commerce welcomed the decision. Its chief executive Gina Quin said: "Commercial rates account for over €300m of Dublin City Council's income. So the decision by Dublin city councillors to reduce commercial rates by 1.7pc at a cost of just under €7m is significant."
The council also outlined plans to save €60m over the next five years by privatising the bin collection services.
A waiver system will be in place for those on low incomes, but those living in senior citizen housing and flat complexes will be forced to pay €1.50 a week for waste collection.
