BURGLARS would need an "atomic bomb" to get past new security measures protecting relics which were stolen last year, an archbishop told Mass-goers yesterday, writes Eimear Ni Bhraonain .
The precious relics of the True Cross of Christ were stolen by thieves from Holycross Abbey in Co Tipperary using a portable angle-grinder last October.
Hundreds of parishioners attended Mass at the abbey yesterday to witness the religious relics being returned.
Gardai recovered the relics, said to be part of the true cross on which Christ was crucified, along with a gold and bronze cross, in January.
After the ceremony yesterday, there was a procession with the relics to a high-security alcove, where the artefacts were placed behind bulletproof glass.
"The burglars will need more than an angle-grinder if they come back, they will need an atomic bomb," said Archbishop of Cashel and Emly Dermot Clifford.
