Bulmers first Irish firm to pull ads

Edel O'Connell

CIDER company Bulmers has become the first major Irish company to pull its advertising from the 'News of the World' following the latest phone-tapping revelations.

Aer Lingus said it would not be advertising with the tabloid in its forthcoming campaign. However, the company would not be drawn out as to whether this decision was made in light of the phone-tapping scandal.

Retailer Supervalu also said that its advertising with the 'News of the World' was under review.

An advertising exodus from the newspaper began on Tuesday night when Ford announced it was cancelling deals with the publication, and a number of others have since followed its lead.

The boycott announcements came as a consumer backlash gathered pace on Twitter with social networkers calling on readers to stop buying the paper entirely.

Another campaign urged more firms to suspend advertising in the red top.

Several major companies have now either withdrawn or suspended their advertising with the paper, including Cadbury, Halifax, Aldi, Vauxhall and Virgin Holidays.
