Budget cuts 'hurt' anti-terror effort

A GARDA crackdown on dissident republicans will be hit by falling numbers in the force, the Government was warned last night.
The AGSI conference heard that the timing for the Government's cutbacks could not have been worse.
Association president Dan Hanley told Justice Minister Dermot Ahern that the embargo on recruitment, plus the accelerated numbers of members retiring, would inevitably mean that the strength of the organisation would decline.
He noted recent comments by the minister that subversive activity was at a high level and rising.
