STUDENT journalists were out in force last night celebrating their 'Oscars' as annual National Student Media Awards, known as the Smedias, were handed out.
The winners, across more than 30 categories, were selected from more than 1,500 entries from third-level colleges.
There was much evidence of talent and hard work, according to organiser Colman Byrne.
The Editor of the Year award, sponsored by the Irish Independent and judged by education editor Katherine Donnelly, went to Emer Sugrue and Aoife Valentine of the 'University Observer', University College Dublin.
James Bennett from Trinity College Dublin was named Feature Writer of the Year (news and politics), judged by 'The Herald' editor Claire Grady.
The awards are now in their 13th year.
Mr Byrne said more were communicating through their blogs, Twitter and Facebook. Yet, he stressed, the awards still show that "print media is much stronger than the online".
