Brothers behind QK have amassed €230m fortune

QK Meats is part of a major food empire controlled by the Queally family. The Waterford-based family own or control two main trading firms: the Arrow Group and Dawn Meats, both established in the 1980s.

Two brothers, Peter, pictured, and John, are estimated to have amassed a €230m fortune. QK Meats is part of the Arrow Group, which also includes Dawn Farms. The 2011 accounts for Arrowshow its turnover at €391m, up 11pc on 2010.

Dawn Fresh Foods, which was recently found to have supplied cottage pies containing horse DNA to English schools via UK trading wing Oak Farm Foods, is also part of Arrow.

Dawn Meats is a separate and unlimited entity. It's by far the bigger business controlled by the Queallys and co-founder Dan Browne, with an annual turnover of €1bn-plus. It has a major contract to supply burgers to McDonald's but has said it does not source any product from QK Meats.
