Broker 'never saw or handled equine product'

A MEAT broker caught up in the horse meat controversy has said he is totally innocent and has never seen or handled equine product.

Martin McAdam (pictured), of McAdam's Foods in Co Monaghan, said he had no explanation for how horse DNA could appear in a meat product.

"I don't under-stand it, I'm still reeling," he said. "I import product from the EU. I have never seen or handled equine product, my company only deals in beef and pork."

He told RTE's 'Prime Time' how four gardai and Department of Agriculture officials called to his house after the story broke.

"I printed off emails, invoices and trade documents and all show that my full dealing from start of transaction to end of transaction all stated it was beef," he said.

"I believe the source of the problem is in Poland and it is all very sophisticated."
