Brian Lenihan’s Tom in gutsy bid for Trinity job

AS political dynasties go, they don’t get much bigger than the Lenihans.

And now a new generation is entering the fray, albeit with a very different approach to those of his late father and grandfather.

Dressed as a tiger and downing raw eggs, Brian Lenihan’s son Tom is ready for a ballot box battle.

The son of the late finance minister has declared himself a presidential candidate in the Trinity College student elections.

Tom (21) has launched an intriguing online campaign in order to persuade the student body that he is presidential material.

The Lenihan family are no strangers to presidential campaigns – with his grandfather Brian Snr narrowly failing in his bid for the Aras in 1990.

But Tom is confident of reversing the fortunes.

And it appears his efforts are working – with an opinion poll showing him to be the frontrunner.

A YouTube video entitled ‘It's Time For Tom' shows him running around Dublin dressed in an orange and black tiger ‘onesie’.

Lenihan is seen doing push-ups on the Luas and necking a cocktail of raw eggs to the tune of Survivor's Eye Of The Tiger.

In a bid to persuade students that he is ready for an election battle, he is seen running through Grafton Street and working out on the college's rugby pitch.

But he also shows a lighter side as he grabs two pints of beer on the steps of the college bar The Pav.

Young Lenihan says he believes what's needed is “a person who understands the issues students face and will not only strive to retain existing services but to improve on them, in order to make college life easier.”
