Breakdown services set for busiest day of year

Mark Hilliard

MORE people will be in need of a jump start to their 2012 today than at any other stage of the year.

Today is forecast to be the busiest day of 2012 for roadside assistance calls, with flat batteries expected to be the single biggest problem.

According to Mondial Assistance Ireland, one of Ireland's largest roadside rescuers, there will be a 50pc increase in calls today compared to a normal weekday.

Hundreds of drivers returning to work after the Christmas break will find their cars either won't start or break down at some point during the day.

"The highest number of call-outs will probably be to a customer's home," explained Mondial general manager Roland Hesse.

"Even if you didn't use your car over the Christmas break, start it a few times to test the battery and take it for a short drive. If you haven't got roadside assistance cover, plan an alternative route to work using the bus, train, Luas or Dart."
