A BRAVE Fine Gael TD is at the forefront of the drive to gain support for hospices.

Longford Westmeath TD Nicky McFadden, who said this week that she has Motor Neurone Disease, yesterday urged people to support the Sunflower Days.

"This is one of the most important fundraising events of the year for hospice services. People will be able to support their local hospice service tomorrow and on Saturday by buying a sunflower pin or sunflower seeds for €2 each from collectors on the streets of cities, towns and villages right around the country."

Hospice Sunflower Days are a major source of income for hospice and voluntary groups. The fundraising drive is co-ordinated by the Irish Hospice Foundation.

More than 27,000 people died every year in Ireland. More than 6,000 people use hospice services every year.

"I've never surrendered in the face of any challenge and I'm not going to surrender to this either," she said about her recently diagnosed condition.
