Brave mum prepares to take plunge

MOTHER-of-two Niki McCarthy was getting into practice for a Christmas Day charity swim -- despite the freezing conditions.

Niki, from Tiernaboul, Killarney, Co Kerry, is pictured by Don MacMonagle with her children Mischa and Oscar. She has organised the swim at Dundag Bay in Muckross Lake, Killarney, for 11am, with all proceeds going to AWARE.

Meanwhile, Christmas swimmers were warned to be careful when taking to the water.

Irish Water Safety said charity swim organisers should diligently assess water conditions and cancel events if in any doubt about safety.

"The cold winter seas can cause 'cold shock' with hypothermia setting in within minutes," chairman Frank Nolan said. "Many people attending Christmas charity swims have found that they are left without sufficient strength to climb out of the water due to the cold.

"If the sea conditions are bad then the charity swim should be cancelled," he said.
