Boyd Barrett hopes to be at funeral of his biological dad
PEOPLE Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett is considering attending the funeral of his recently deceased biological father, renowned theatre director Vincent Dowling.
Mr Boyd Barrett confirmed that Mr Dowling was his father at the weekend, after the director died in America.
The Dail TD spoke of his sadness at Mr Dowling's death, and said he was in family discussions about attending the funeral.
"I can confirm that Vincent Dowling was my biological father," said Mr Boyd Barrett (45), who was in Germany, where he was attending a conference organised by Die Linke (the Left Party).
Mr Dowling (83) had been living in Massachusetts and is survived by his wife Olwen O'Herlihy Dowling, children and grandchildren.
More than six years ago, Mr Boyd Barrett had an emotional reunion with his biological mother, actress Sinead Cusack.
Mr Boyd Barrett was born in 1967 when Ms Cusack was 19, and was adopted and raised in Dun Laoghaire in Dublin by Valerie and David Boyd Barrett.
Mr Boyd Barrett told the 'Sunday Independent' he and his father had made contact a few years ago.
"He lived in America but we had a relationship. I was aware that he was ill. I'm very sad today and my sisters are very sad," he said. He said their relationship was not as close as the one he forged with Ms Cusack.
"He lived in America, in Massachusetts, so it wasn't possible to have that close a relationship. And also he was much older so travelling was difficult for him. But we got on well."
Mr Boyd Barrett said of the funeral: "Arrangements are being discussed and will be decided in the next few days."
