Jamie Mullane-Forest, from Shanagolden in Co Limerick, was out playing with friends when the accident occurred at 7pm on Tuesday.

The nine-year-old was playing in the Parkview Estate in Shanagolden when he was struck on the back of the head by the golf ball.

He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick but transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin later that night with a serious head injury.

A spokesperson for Beaumont described his condition yesterday as "critical".

Prayers were being said for the popular young boy yesterday in the close-knit community of Shanagolden.

"This was a tragic accident and all our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family," said one local.

Jamie is due to start third class at Pallaskenry National School next month. His family were at his bedside in Beaumont Hospital last night.
