A nine-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital after he fell off his bike in a collision with a car.

The accident happened just before 7pm in the townland of Rathgormack, Co Waterford near the Comeragh mountains around two miles south of Carrick on Suir.

The boy sustained a head injury in the accident and, although he remained conscious, the HSE ambulance service requested the assistance of the coastguard to transfer him to hospital as a precaution.

Rescue helicopter 117 based at Waterford was tasked to carry out the transfer to Cork University Hospital and the boy was airlifted along with his mother who was not injured in the incident.
