AN eight-year-old boy has been killed in a farm accident in Galway.

The young boy died after he fell into a potato sorting machine on the family farm in Kilcolgan.

The tragic accident occurred in a shed behind the family home between 11am and 11.30am this morning, gardai confirmed to Independent.ie.

The little boy, who is an only child, was rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Galway but sadly died.

The communities in South Galway were described as being numb with grief as news of the tragedy spread. Prayers were said for the little boy at mass in Ardrahan tonight.

The boy's father is a well known farmer in the area.

“They are just a lovely family and well respected in all the local communities. The whole of South Galway is numbed with grief at the news. For them to lose their only child so close to Christmas is heartbreaking,” said one local man.

Two separate investigations have been launched into the tragic death.

Gardai will investigate the incident as will the Health and Safety Authority.

Acting Principal of the school the second class pupil attends said they are "deeply saddened" by the event.

The school has implemented their Critical Incident Management Plan and psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service have advised the school on what steps to take.

The school will be open on Monday and Tuesday in an effort to support the pupils and parents.
