A seven-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital following a car crash in Co Antrim.

Two vehicles were involved in the collision on Lough Road, Islandmagee, at around 2.40pm on Saturday.

A woman and two boys aged 7 and 9, travelling in a white Ford Ka, were taken to hospital.

The seven-year-old's condition is described as critical, and the driver also remains in hospital with serious injuries.

A couple and two children, aged 2 and 3, travelling in a blue Vauxhall Mokka, were also taken to hospital. They are not believed to have sustained any life-threatening injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Inspector David McCausland said: “We believe several vehicles were in the area at the time and the occupants may have either witnessed the collision or came upon the scene but turned and left without leaving any details.

"We would appeal to these potential witnesses to get in touch with us. Officers can be contacted by calling 101 and asking for police at Larne."
