A six-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after he was struck by a car on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred in the Abbey Lane area of Athlone, Co Westmeath at around 8.30pm.

The young boy was struck by a car which failed to remain at the scene.

The child was taken to hospital after the incident but gardai confirmed to Independent.ie that the boy's injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.

Gardai are now appealing for information or for the driver of the car to contact them.

They requested that anybody who was in the area at the time contact them in Athlone at (090) 649 8550.
