Boy (5) hurt in attack by rare fighting dog

A FIVE-year boy has been treated for bites after being attacked by a rare dog bred for fighting.

The child suffered several injuries to his head as he was being walked to sligo in Sligo.

Students from IT Sligo rescued the boy during the attack on Tuesday as he was being taken to St Edward's Boys School. The boy was treated for injuries at Sligo General Hospital and released.

The dog was later destroyed with the consent of its owner.

"A Japanese Akita is stronger than a German Shepherd," said council dog warden Anthony Mr McDaniel. "It kind of looks a little like a teddy bear and can seem placid but it can suddenly become turbulent."
