Boys will be boys. And yesterday the fire brigade was called to rescue a five-year-old boy whose climbing skills got him 30ft up a tree, but he couldn't get down.

Two units of Ennis fire brigade responded to the "special services" call at Ballyalla Lake, about 4km from the Co Clare town.

It is understood that the youngster was visiting the lake with his mother and siblings when he wandered away and climbed the tree.

The boy was "close to the top", 30ft up, when he got into difficulty.

The fire crews used a hydraulic platform to lift two members into the tree to recover the youngster.

The boy was rescued from the tree at about 4.50pm after being trapped for around half an hour.

One rescuer said: "It didn't knock a stir out of him and he was not hurt at all. It appears he climbed nearly all the way up and just wasn't able to get back down. He was close to the top."
