Boy, 11, killed after farming accident

STEPHEN MAGUIRE

An 11-year-old boy died after a tragic farming accident in Co Donegal yesterday.

The young child was killed in the accident involving a tractor near Glenvar, Kerrykeel.

The boy's family is believed to hail from the nearby area of Churchill.

It is believed he was on his uncle's farm when the accident happened.

Local gardai, ambulance and accident investigators immediately attended the fatal scene.

"The family are obviously totally devastated," said one local man yesterday, "but exactly what happened on the farm is unclear at this stage."

The boy was hugely popular in the area and his family is very well known.

The 11-year-old was rushed by ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital -- but efforts by the doctors to save him failed.

However, his name is not being released until all relatives have been informed of the tragedy.

An investigation team from the Health and Safety Authority yesterday travelled to Donegal to visit the scene of the accident.

The local man added: "The accident happened at around lunchtime and ambulances were called -- but the wee boy didn't survive.

"There is just widespread shock."
