The tragedy happened at a beach in Youghal, Co Cork, at around 5pm on Thursday.

A Garda spokesman said the RNLI pulled the boy from the water and gave CPR at the scene.

He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy was the third person to drown this week as temperatures soared. The Irish Coast Guard and water safety chiefs have called on the public to take extra care in the sea, rivers and lakes nationwide.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who spotted a person in the water who was not moving.

The Youghal RNLI lifeboat was on scene, east of Youghal lighthouse, within minutes.

The RNLI said two members of the public, including a nurse, who had swam out to the area where the casualty had disappeared, were brought onboard the lifeboat.

Several members of the public were assisting in the search along with a numbers of vessels, including a fishing vessel who found the boy and brought him on board.

The lifeboat went to the boat where crew member Daragh Mathews and the nurse began to administer CPR to the casualty.
