Boxing team knocked out of event by ash

THE Irish senior boxing team have cancelled plans to take part in the Feliks Stamm Multi Nations in Warsaw, Poland, because of air-travel restrictions as a result of the volcanic ash clouds.

Ireland had named a 10-strong men's and women's team, which includes Katie Taylor, Kenny Egan and World and European Youth champs Ray Moylette and Jason Quigley, for the tournament.

The flights ban is also having a major effect on live concerts.

The National Concert Hall has been particularly badly hit. An appearance by Luxembourg's Philharmonic Orchestra was cancelled yesterday and a performance by Iceland's Bedroom Community Whale Watching collective tomorrow night has also been postponed.

"It's unprecedented to be sending out statements on cancelled concerts day after day," National Concert Hall marketing manager Sinead Doyle told the Irish Independent.

Also hit were shows by electro-indie outfit LCD Soundsystem in Dublin's Tripod venue tonight and tomorrow night.
