Bosses to lose out as Quinn slashes VECs

UP TO six senior education chiefs will be seeking new jobs after Education Minister Ruairi Quinn confirmed yesterday that he is halving the number of vocational education committees (VECs) to 16, writes Katherine Donnelly.
It means not all the chief executive officers in the existing 33 VECS will continue in the same posts, although they will be entitled to redeployment.
They are on salaries ranging from about €100,000 to over €130,000.
The Irish Vocational Education Committee (IVEA) expressed dismay that the minister had not accepted its compromise proposal for a minimum of 20 VECs.
