Q AS many as 10 Bord Gais staff joined Irish Water at salaries higher than advertised, it has emerged.
The jobs in the water utility company were advertised and salary levels published, but were filled by workers who were allowed keep their existing, higher pay packets, the Dail Environment committee was told.
Irish Water managing director John Tierney said as many as 10 workers benefited.
"That's correct in the case of about 10," he said. "I think the expertise these people provide will be hugely beneficial for Irish Water," he said.
It is understood the Irish Water jobs paid up to €10,000 less than the salaries these workers were already receiving, but Labour TD Kevin Humphreys said the figure could be higher.
He said he was concerned that these extra costs would be passed on to customers when they begin paying for water.
"I understand that one of those positions was advertised at €50,000 but someone (from Bord Gais) applied and got €70,000," he said.
"I would ask the regulator to look at that quite closely."
