Medics from the Royal College of Physicians briefed 30 Fine Gael TDs and senators last night but failed to convinced them to back down on their opposition to the so-called 'booze curtain'.

Senator Michelle Mulherin told the Irish Independent: "They made a case for prohibition but they didn't make an evidence based case for separation."

Junior health minister Marcella Corcoran Kennedy said she still wants to find a way forward for the bill. But party chairman Martin Heydon said: "I expect the minister and Fine Gael senators to sit down now and work out possible amendments."
