THE fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, has confirmed he will visit Ireland to thank a rural athletics club for their support.

This was revealed as Ireland's Athletics team manager Patsy McGonagle was given the freedom of his native county yesterday – only the sixth person to receive the award. He joins Shay Given and Packie Bonner in receiving the honour.

Bolt's manager, Ricky Simms, is a member of McGonagle's Finn Valley Athletic Club. "I spoke to Ricky in Oslo on Thursday night and Usain was with him having just completed the 200m there," Patsy told the Irish Independent.

"They are totally booked out for the rest of this year but there are less events in 2014 and Usain said he wants to come over to Donegal early next year. He said he was mad keen to be here. We just have to set the final date."

McGonagle has dedicated his life to athletics in Donegal and Ireland. He said he was deeply humbled by yesterday's award.

"It is an immense honour for my family and a fantastic recognition of athletics," he said.
