Body of man (80s) found on side of the road, gardaí appealing for witnesses

A man in his 80s was found dead on the side of the road in Co Monaghan this afternoon.

His body was discovered in Carnaveigh, Castleblayney at around 4pm.

A blue Opel Corsa was found crashed nearby.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, was uninjured.

Gardaí could not yet confirm to Independent.ie if the two incidents are connected.

They said an investigation is now underway.

The man's body was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by the garda forensics team.
