Body of Irishman recovered as bride and best man killed in boating tragedy
A BODY believed to be that of a missing 30-year-old Irishman has been discovered following a horror boating tragedy in New York.
Mark Lennon, whose family emigrated from Longford in the 1970s, was due to be the best man at the wedding of Brian Bond and Lindsey Stewart in two weeks’ time.
However, Mr Lennon and Ms Stewart were killed – and Mr Bond injured - when the speedboat they were in smashed into a construction barge on New York’s Hudson River on Friday.
The bodies have not yet been formally identified. Mr Lennon’s body was found yesterday.
Jojo John, who was operating the boat, was charged Saturday with vehicular manslaughter and three counts of vehicular assault from a hospital bed where he was recovering from his injuries.
Authorities said they suspect the 35-year-old was intoxicated at the time of the crash and are awaiting the results of blood tests.
It is understood that Mr Lennon’s father Kevin emigrated from Drumlish in Longford in the late 70s, and the family settled in Pearl River in New York.
